Why do you need a radio director?

For objectivity, practical knowledge of recording techniques and inspiration.

We've got a huge amount of experience in running recording sessions and a good director will make it look easy - it isn't.

Actors need to be directed, their presence in the studio won't magically translate into a performance without it.

For instance, the Rorschach directing style uses radio tricks like keeping a character present in a scene where they don't have scripted lines, getting actors moving around, using props rather than library fx, staying constructive and making progress however many takes you've done, letting the good stuff happen and knowing when you've got it.

And engineers benefit from good direction. Freed from the task of trying to hold a session together, they are able to contribute far more technical imagination.

Or, as a client put it rather succinctly, 'Apart from a good Director having an ear for creative casting, a wealth of SFX and foley knowledge, exceptional co-ordination skills and a general grounding in studio set-ups, mic dynamics and recording techniques, they have a real knack in pronouncing tricky takeaway orders'.

Which makes us feel our lives have not been wasted.
